Description

An archaeological survey project of the eastern half of the Exmoor National Park carried out by staff at the RCHME Exeter Office. A project to survey the western half of Exmoor has also been carried out (EMO6590). As part of the East Exmoor survey, four projects, were carried out by Aerial Survey staff at the RCHME Swindon office. Two of these, Winsford Hill and Withypool Common covered quite large areas, whereas the others were much more restricted in area. The aerial photographic transcription of Winsford Hill took place between June and December 1999. The survey was confined to an irregular shaped area, which measures approximately 8 kilometres squared and extends over the unenclosed land on Winsford Hill. The project area is bounded by the following grid references: SS 8600 3500, SS 8950 3400, SS 9800 3200, SS 9800 3050, SS 8800 3050. The objective of the survey was to interpret and transcribe at 1:2500 scale, all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs in the survey area. The transcription was produced with the aid of the Digicart stereophotogrammetric plotter and the AERIAL 4.2 Aerial Photograph Rectification program. A final drawing was produced using the AutoCAD drawing package. Monument recording has been carried out for the extensive field system and ridge and furrow plotted as part of the project. The collection for RCHME: Winsford Hill, East Exmoor, consists of a report (which lists methods, photographs consulted and a brief description of the archaeology and a reduced size plan), and a film and paper copy of the AutoCAD drawing at 1:2500 scale (Collection UID 1301154). The aerial photographic transcription of Withypool Common took place between November 1999 and January 2000. The survey was confined to an irregular shaped area, which measures approximately 9 kilometres squared and extends over the unenclosed land of Withypool Common (including the unenclosed land north of Landacre Bridge and the River Barle) and Withypool Hill. The project area is bounded by the approximate grid references: SS 806375, SS 829372, SS 825355, SS 830351, SS 842352, SS 847338, SS 812345 and SS 805360. No monument recording has been carried out as part of the project as this will be undertaken at the field assessment stage. The collection for EH: Withypool Common, East Exmoor, consists of a report (which lists methods, photographs consulted and a brief description of the archaeology and a reduced size plan), and a film and paper copy of the AutoCAD drawing at 1:2500 scale (Collection UID 1304854). The aerial photographic transcription of the Woodadvent Lane Enclosure took place during February 2000. The survey was confined to a single field measuring approximately 8 hectares centred at ST 044 380. Due to the poor quality of the photographs, and the very eroded nature of the site, the objective of the survey was to interpret and transcribe at 1:10,000 scale, all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs in the survey area. The transcription was produced using the AERIAL 4.2 Aerial Photograph Rectification program. A final drawing was produced using the AutoCAD drawing package. No monument recording has been carried out as part of the project as this will be undertaken at the field assessment stage. The collection for EH: Woodadvent Lane, East Exmoor, consists of a report (which lists methods, photographs consulted and a brief description of the archaeology and a reduced size plan) (Collection UID 1304853). The aerial photographic transcription of Colton Pits took place between January and February 2000. The survey covered an area approximately 1.4 km by 1.2 km, although the core area of interest was confined to mining activity of uncertain date on the top of the hill, an area c600m x 400m. The objective of the survey was to interpret and transcribe at 1:2500 scale, all archaeological features visible on aerial photographs in the survey area. The transcription was produced using the AERIAL 4.2 Aerial Photograph Rectification program. A final drawing was produced using the AutoCAD drawing package. No monument recording has been carried out as part of the project as this will be undertaken at the field assessment stage. The collection for EH: Colton Pits, East Exmoor, consists of a report (which lists methods, photographs consulted and a brief description of the archaeology and a reduced size plan) (Collection UID 1304852). Monument location data applied to aid retrieval 2018.
