Full Description

"Warren" and "Warren plantation" printed on 1962 map. [1] There is a large pillow mound located at SS 8828 3635 on the side of the valley. It runs at right angles to the slope of the hill and appears to be ditched on either side. Exact dimensions were not able to be recorded. [2] The description in [2] suggests that the site was only viewed from a distance. Nothing could be found at the National Grid Reference cited in an area of dense bracken on steep north facing slopes. It is possible that the feature lies concealed by the bracken, but more likely that a natural outcrop (of which there are several) has been mistaken for a pillow mound. It is recommended that further reconnaissance is carried out in the early spring to confirm the presence or otherwise of the feature. [3] Marked as 'Warren' and 'Warren Plantation' on Ordnance Survey County Series; 1st Edition 25 Inch Map [4]. 'Warren plantation' is shown as plot 468 on the Winsford Tithe Map of 1839 and is recorded as a pasture field and named 'Furzy Warren' in the Tithe Apportionment book. The area of the land to the west is labelled 469 on the Tithe Map and is recorded as a pasture field called 'Great Warren' in the Tithe Apportionment book. [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6]
