MSO8758 - Neolithic peat exposure on Halscombe Allotment (Monument)

Full Description
Peat face within shallow combe on Halscombe Allotment averaging 1.3 metres deep. Within the lower part of the peat face are pieces of organic material; small branches from 0.015 metres to 0.05 metres in diameter which are eroding rapidly. At the foot of the peat face and now lying on the modern ground surface is a tree trunk 6.2 metres long which may also have eroded from the peat. The tree has been dated to 3635-3360 Calibrated BC, and is oak. [1] This record was included in gazetteer of known sites that preserve wood macro-fossils on Exmoor. [2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
