Full Description

A truncated mound 15 paces in diameter and 2 feet high (Minehead Without 4). Visited by Grinsell 9 November 1959. [1] This is a truncated cairn. [2] A truncated cairn covered with heather and gorse. [3] The mound is 0.6 metres high and 0.9 metres across with hole in centre indicating past robbing. [4] A large cairn, part of group east of Selworthy Beacon, lies at SS 92315 48012. It was surveyed using differential GPS as part of the RCHME East Exmoor project. The cairn comprises a circular, stony mound, 14 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high, with a pronounced rim. The southern side appears to have been robbed. The cairn is covered with low heather, following a recent burn. Two small depressions in the northern section of the cairn suggest robbing or excavation. [5] The cairn is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 25 inch map of the area. [6] Scheduling revised with new national number (was Somerset 345) on 3 September 2002. [8] SS 925 479. Group of Cairns East of Selworthy Beacon. Scheduled. [9] Of the group of 11 cairns on the ridge of Selworthy Beacon, 2 or 3 were open in 1807 by Richard Fenton. Only charcoal was recovered. [10] The cairn is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. [11-13] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 gave the site a survival score of 3. [13] The site was surveyed in June 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 3.
