Full Description

The remains of a small shelter lie on Black Hill at SS 9870 4023. It comprises a horseshoe shaped drystone wall, constructed against a large earthfast boulder and measures 5 by 3 metres. The walls are 1 metre wide and 0.8 metres high. It probably dates from the last century or later, and may have been used for agricultural purposes. The site was surveyed using differential GPS as part of the RCHME Exmoor project. [1] The shelter is not shown on the Tithe Map for Withycombe but it is situated just to the west of a routeway depicted running north to south across the hill. [2] Neither the routeway nor the shelter is not shown on the 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. [3]
