Full Description
[ST 01073635] Cross (NR) (Remains of) (NAT). [1] Remains of a late 13th Century churchyard cross. The socket only is in a fair state of preservation. The upper bed is an octagon converted into a square by high convex broaches. The steps are square at present, but as displaced that the original plan cannot be traced. The carved stone on the top is supposed to have belonged to the cross head. [2] This cross has been restored. The socket stone stands on three rebuilt octagonal steps. The shaft and lantern head are modern. But the latter is capped by the original canopy, which is presumably the 'curved stone' noted by Pooley [6]. [3] Churchyard cross about 10 metres south of porch in the Church of St Peter . The cross was restored in late 19th century. It is constructed from a mixture of local and Ham stone. There is a 19th Century octagonal shaft surmounted by a gabled niche amd a trefoil headed opening containing the figure of St Peter. [4] Scheduled on 5 July 2002. [5] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 gave the site a survival score of 0. [7] The building was visited in June 2013 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 5A. [8] The site was surveyed in June 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 0. [9]
