Full Description

Adit at SS 8233 3860 facing north on south side of valley running into hill north to south. [1] Was part of the Newland mining operations. [2] "Adit" marked on the 1979 map but not on the 1962 map. [3,4] An adit is centred at SS 8237 3865 on north-northeast facing slopes on the southern side of Pennycombe Water. It is in good condition and consists of a triangular opening measuring 1.1 metres across (at ground level) and 0.5 metres high, cut into the shaly subsoil. Access to the interior is possible, but was not attempted, and the passage could be seen for some 8 metres, dipping downwards into the hillside. A length of tram rail is visible inside. A gulley, 2.9 metres wide and 1.0 metres deep leads from the adit, but has been crossed by a later catchwork leat. No spoil heap is visible. [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6] The adit is marked and labelled on the 2021 MasterMap data. [7]
