Full Description
A stone is recorded at SS 7178 4002. There is no trace of this boundary stone on the ground. It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 dated 1890. [1] In a perambulation of the bounds of the manor of Challacombe Regis, about 1658, bound points include `the greatest stone above the Broadbarrow'. [2] Point on the Parish and Forest boundary annotated `Stone on Broadbarrow'. [3]. Boundary point named `Broadbarrow Stone'. [4] Broadbarrow stone marked on 6 inch Ordnance Survey map as being a boundary stone. [5] SS 71777 40021 The site of Broadbarrow Stone. In boundary perambulations of 1678 Broadburrough and Broadburrow are mentioned [2]. A dot is shown annotated Broadbarrow Stone on the 1888 1:2500 survey [6] on the boundary between Devon and Somerset, which also marked the Challacombe/Exmoor Parish boundary and the boundary of the Forest of Exmoor. On the 1902 revision [7] it is also annotated (as "B.S."). It must have been moved sometime after this as it was not shown during the 1976 Ordnance Survey revision [8] and there is now no trace of it. An enclosure wall approaching from the west (i.e. the Devon side) ends abruptly on the County Boundary. The boundary stone may have been incorporated into the end of the wall and it could still be in situ; however nothing was seen to confirm this possibility. [9] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. N.B. 895576 is recorded against this record as a reference, with the NMR reference SS 74 SW 77. It is not, however, available on the NRHE-HER website to review. [10] A small mark on an 1818 map of Exmoor at this location may represent the stone, although it is not labelled. [11]
