Full Description
Bury Bridge foot bridge is marked 'F.B.' at SS 9445 2746, on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map. [1] Bury Bridge, on the River Haddeo, has four arches and a roadway, with a width of approximately 6 feet. [2] This bridge carries limited vehicular traffic. It is not of outstanding architectural interest (see photograph). [3, 4] SS 945275. Bury Bridge. Scheduled, Somerset 11. [5] Bury Bridge, over the River Haddeo is a narrow medieval stone pack-horse bridge, on four segmental-pointed arches, with three cutwater buttresses each side. It has high stone parapets. [6] Bury Bridge, of unknown date, is of local stone masonry and consists of four spans, one 10 feet, one 8 feet and two 7 feet long, giving a total length of 63 feet. The carriageway is 6 feet 10 inches wide. [7] Bury Bridge is a packhorse bridge over the River Haddeo. It is medieval, and has been altered subsequently. It consists of flat bedded slate stone, dressed rubble voussoirs, hit and miss coping, and a pebble trackway. It has a four arch span, set skew. The west front (downstream), has two semi-circular arches and two pointed arches, square buttress cutwaters flanking the two northern arches. There are similar openings on the east front, with three pointed cutwaters at the centre. [8] Bury Bridge is a picturesque medieval structure over the River Haddeo, on the line of an ancient road called Fort Lane. There is a ford by the bridge. The bridge has two pointed arches to the south and two lower curving arches to the north. There are three flat buttress-like cutwaters downstream and two pointed cutwaters upstream. The roadway is c1.5 metres across. Part of the road at each end is cobbled. [9] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 provided the site with a score of 3. [13] The bridge was visited in March 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 5A. [15] The site was surveyed in July 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 7. [16] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [17]
