Full Description
Stone SS 8300 4454 (NAT), Stone SS 8302 4449 (NAT) [1] Thought to form part of a stone setting. [6] Post-medieval boundary stone at SS 8300 4454. Ground photos [2] Supplied to the NAR [1-4] Centred at SS 8300 4454. Two stones, 90 metres apart, are situated on gently sloping ground on a northwestern spur of Porlock Allotment at 410 metres Ordnance Datum: Stone A. SS 8298 4458. A thin rectangular slatey slab 0.28 metres high, 0.2 metres wide east to west and 0.05 metres thick in an erosion hollow 1.6 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres deep. It appears to have been broken as two pieces 0.45 metres and 0.40 metres long and both 0.02 metres wide and 0.05 metres thick lie in the hollow on the southern side, so originally the stone may have been up to 1.3 metres high. Stone B. SS 8302 4449. An upright earthfast slab 0.65 metres high, 0.03 metres wide eastnortheast to westnorthwest and 0.1 metres thick set in an erosion hollow 2 metres diameter 0.02 metres deep. The stones were set up in the 19th Century to define the property boundary between the Manors of Glenthorne and Oare. [4,5] A large rather amorphous mound lies some 15 metres to the northwest of stone B, at SS 8301 4450. The mound measures some 8.5 metres in diameter and is 0.8 metres high. It is peaty, with little stone and is most likely to be associated with peat cutting. The mound was recorded using differential GPS as part of the EH survey of Mill Hill for the ENPA. The second stone at SS 8298 4458 (B) could not be located. [?] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [12]
