MSO6844 - Twizzle Mark Stone (Monument)

Summary

A boundary stone first mentioned in a law suit of 1678, marking the division between Devon and Somerset. It was marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1888 but not on that of 1902. It may now be hidden within a wall junction.

Full Description

(SS 71704192) Twizzle Mark Stone (NAT) [1] The Twizzle Mark Stone was a boundary stone between Exmoor Forest and Devon at the junction of the commons of the manors of Chollacombe Regis and Chollacombe Raleigh. It is first mentioned in a law suit in 1678 when the spelling was given as Twizill and Twizzell ([2]). In the Perambulation of Exmoor Forest in 1815 it is Twizzel and on the Enclosure Map of 1819 Twizzle Mark Stone. [3] SS71697 41912. The Twizzle Mark Stone a boundary marker for the Devon/Somerset County Boundary as well as the Forest of Exmoor, first mentioned in 1678 [2]. It was also situated at the western edge of the packhorse track/hollow-way route from Lynton to South Molton. It is shown annotated Twizzle Mark Stone on the 1888 Ornance Survey map ([4]) but not on the revision of 1902 ([5]). There is now no trace of this stone; however, it may still be in situ, hidden within the wall junction or moved (see MSO7133).
