Full Description

Free access was not obtained to this site due to an ongoing legal dispute between the farm partners. Nevertheless it was possible to record the pair of lime kilns and associated structure at SS 8250 3851, which are deteriorating. The lime kilns are built into the southern side of the quarry and are best viewed from the north. Here, a coursed stone wall, 11.8 metres long with a pronounced batter and pilasters is pierced by the flues of the two kilns. These are round headed arches of edge set stones, 2.1 metres high and 2.5 metres wide. The kilns were loaded from a tramway above. The collapsed bowls of the kilns are visible here and appear to be deteriorating rapidly. A workshop range adjoins the kilns (running northwards from their west end). It consists of a rectangular building, of roughly coursed mortared stone. The walls average 1.6 metres high and are 0.4 metres thick. One internal subdivision is visible towards the southern end, where the building appears to have been open fronted. It is clear that further recording is necessary on this important industrial complex. [1,2] The lime kiln is depicted and labelled on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. [3] The lime kilns and again shown on 2018 MasterMap data, and are noted as disused. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
