MSO11484 - Middle Bronze Age barrow at Outer Alcott (Monument)

One of three Bronze Age barrows grouped together on Outer Alcott. It is a circular stony mound, 6 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. A central, well defined pit is possibly associated with World War Two activity in the area.

One of 3 circular mounds on Outer Alcott, 5 paces diameter and 1.5 feet high with a hollow in the centre. [1] Oare 11, SS 8227 4477. 0.3 to 0.4 metres high, composed of peat and stones and probably a small bowl barrow. (See G.Ps. AO/65/175/5-8) Surveyed at 1/2500 [2,3] Plotted at SS 8231 4480 on OS 1:10,000 map rather than at SS 8227 4477 given by OSAD and Grinsell. [4] A group of three prehistoric barrows centred at SS 8230 4488. All have been disturbed, probably as a result of World War Two activity in the area. There is a discrepancy between the locations of the barrows on the published Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map and the National Grid References (NGRs) given by [2,3]. The published locations are accepted here (with [2,3]'s NGRs in brackets). Barrow 2 lies on a relatively stone free surface, which has recently been burnt off and is centred at SS 8230 4479 (SS 8227 4477). The central barrow, it is a circular stony mound, 6 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. It is less well-defined than MSO11485 but there is an abundance of surface stone, some pieces in excess of 0.5 metres long. A central, well-defined pit, 2 metres square and 0.3 metres deep, is probably associated with World War Two military activity in the area.
