Full Description
A quarry of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, centred on circa SS 8909 3421, on the eastern slopes of Winsford Hill. The pit is irregularly shape and around 20 metres across at its widest point. It is enclosed by a narrow earthwork bank with a break for a possible entrance on the eastern side. The purpose of the pit is unclear from the aerial photographs alone, but it may have been excavated for building material used in the metalling of the nearby Halse Lane, probably in the 19th Century. However, the pit appears to be respected by the relict field system to the north, with which it may be contemporary.
