Full Description

A quarry of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of Almsworthy Common, Luccombe parish, centred on circa SS 84464179. The pit is irregularly shaped, but is up to 20 metres wide. Amorphous spoil heaps are dumped to the north and south of the pit. It is annotated as Old Quarry on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1890 and therefore had probably passed out of use by the end of the 19th Century. [1-4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
