Full Description
A medieval or post-medieval quarry or extractive pit is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the northwest slopes of Trout Hill, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7848 4254, the quarry is cut into a steep northwest facing slope above an unnamed tributary of Hoccombe Water and measures approximately 22 metres across. The feature is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map as "old quarry" suggesting it was abandoned shortly before publication in 1891. There is no indication as to what material was extracted here, but given that the quarry lies in an area of extensive 19th agricultural improvement by the Knight family, it is likely that stone for buildings and enclosures was quarried here.
