Full Description
A small medieval or post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the northwestern slopes of Trout Hill, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7891 4303, the quarry measures approximately 15 metres across at its widest point. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1891, suggesting it was abandoned prior to this date. It is not clear what material was being extracted here. The quarry lies close to a 19th Century enclosure boundary, probably constructed by the Knight family after acquiring the former Royal Forest of Exmoor, and it is possible that the quarry is related to the construction of this boundary.
