Full Description
Lynchet banks of possible medieval origin are visible on aerial photographs as sinuous or curvilinear earthworks to the east of Stock Wood, centred on circa SS 7155 4716. The earthworks are visible running east to west for just over 200 metres at an elevation of about 250 metres, along a small spur formed by the confluence of the West Lyn River and one of its tributaries. They are now crossed very straight extant field boundaries of probable post-medieval date, but originally probably curved to the south-west from circa SS 7145 4719 to circa SS 7142 4704, to form a larger field system with the extant field boundaries to the south. A small section of bank may survive at circa SS 7142 4704, but was not clear enough through the rough vegetation to transcribe. [1,2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
