Full Description
The Tithe Map for Exford shows no unusual features in this position on the laneside. [1] The 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map depicts a protuberance from the hedge into Stone Lane at SS 8648 3899. It is not shown as roofed but has straight sides forming a northern, western and southern side; the eastern is shown as open and part of the field to the east. The feature is not labelled. [2] The feature is again shown on the 2nd Edition map, by which time a further, smaller feature of the same nature is shown at SS 8648 3902. [3] The 2018 MasterMap data only depicts the northern feature. [4] The site was visited by an Exmoor Ranger in c.September 2018. A rubble stone structure is shown on the side of the lane, surviving to approximately 1 or 1.5m metres in height. The position indicated within the photographs suggest it is the earlier structure at SS 8648 3899 that is shown, although the location maps within the document provided record it as the later feature at SS 8648 3902.
