The old stone chapel, built into the hillside halfway between the village and the church, is now in private use. The meeting room was reached by a flight of steps at the side, and underneath was a small boiler room. Methodist work began in the district aroun 1838 in the farmhouse of a Mr Chamberlain. Shortly afterwards an undenominational chapel was opened, but eventutally handed over to the Methodists, and added to the Lynton circuit. [1] The building is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd Edition 25 inch maps where it is labelled "Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan)". [2,3] The site is shown empty on the Brendon Tithe Map of 1841. [4] The building is depicted and labelled "The Old Chapel" on 2020 MasterMap data. [5]
