Full Description

The building first appears on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, when it replaces a smaller building that occupied a corner of the site that was depicted on the Tithe Map for Winsford (MEM23599). It appears to have been little altered in plan since this time and now houses a shop and the village post office. [1-5] The Post Office Stores dates from the 19th Century. [6] The Post Office moved from West Galliford (MEM23583) on retirement of the old Post Mistress to the centre of the village in its present premises. After the bakery (MEM23611) closed, the owners, Mr and Mrs Barwick, began to stock essential foods. When they retired, their daughter and son-in-law took on the business and gradually enlarged the premises, which had become the only village shop. Some houses, including the present Post Office, were flooded to a depth of some 2.5 to 3 feet during the 1952 floods. [7]
