Full Description
A platform was noted during a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This feature was clearly defined and was seen to be terraced into the slope. It is subcircular and approximately 12 metres in diameter. It is possibly a roundhouse platform, similar to MEM22537. It is cut by a drainage ditch. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, which included this site. Noted was a circular platform cut into the slope; this is 12 metres in diameter and is formed by scarps 1 metre high on the northern, upslope side and 0.5 metres high on the southern, downslope sides. It is cut by leat MEM22577 and is likely to be a prehistoric house platform.[2] A large scale metric survey of an area of earthworks on Halscombe was undertaken by Hazel Riley in 2013 as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. A circular platform was surveyed, measuring 12 metres in diameter; this is formed by a well defined scarp 1 metre high on the north side and a slighter scarp, 0.5 metres high on the south side. The platform is cut by a leat MEM22577. This is most likely to be a prehistoric hut platform dating from the Middle Bronze Age. [3]
