Full Description
A flint core of prehistoric date was recovered from a stratified context of alluvium below peat in Red Sand Bay, Porlock Beach. Following the recovery of the flint core in Red Sand Bay, a limited assessment excavation was carried out to determine whether further flints were present and to provide stratigraphic context. A small area of circa 0.5 square metres was excavated to a maximum depth of 80 millimetres. A 650 gram sample was taken for charcoal floatation. The excavated peat and alluvium was seived through a 5 millimetre mesh. No further artefacts were found but samples of macro-fossil plant remains and small quantities of fragmentary bivalve shell recovered. [1]
