Full Description

Engine Shaft. Part of Britannia Mine. In 1982 the site lay beneath a forestry road, but will probably be revealed again as the ground settles. In 1976 it was clearly visible as a depression some six feet deep and approximately retaining its original measurements, twelve feet by six feet. The shaft was filled in before 1857 and the material within had since settled. It is shown on the 25 inch 1889 Ordnance Survey map as an old quarry. [1,2]
