Description
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake a programme of historic building recording in advance of construction works for an extension to Ivy Cottage, Parracombe. Monitoring of all ground works undertaken at the site was also carried out.
Ivy Cottage is on the HER for Exmoor (MEM23401). It is noted that a building in its location is on the tithe map of 1839. It is already therefore noted as of local importance as a heritage asset, even if undesignated. Arguably it is of an age to fit the Listing requirements but has been much compromised by loss of historic fabric and modernisations. It is a traditional building, of historic vernacular stone build, with a cob raise and is of complex semi-domestic function, formerly a house of late medieval origin and then reduced to the status of a worker’s cottage. Its semi-derelict condition and lack of occupancy over the last few years has exacerbated the lack of care taken in modern alterations to the building in the 20th century.
