Description
The foundation trenching associated with the construction of three buildings within a pasture field to the east of Ivy Cottage, Church Hill, Exford were monitored and recorded by South West Archaeology staff. A total of approximately 225 metres of foundation trenching was dug, most of it 0.6 metres wide. In trench 1 a linear feature was noted that appeared to have been partially filled before having a fire in it; this contained abundant wood-charcoal and some burnt bone. The charcoal was consistent with the gathering of fuelwood for domestic activities and radiocarbondating of one hazel twig gave a date of 1140+-35BP (or 780-990 calAD).
