Description
An assessment of Lynton Cottage Hospital was undertaken in October 2013 to provide an up to date record of the physical structure and detail of the building as it had become redundant and to assess the degree of impact that any new development would have on the building. The building is considered by reason of its long history of use in the community to be of historic interest. The report was based on written archive material and physical visual inspection of the building, although the attics and roof voids were not inspected.
The hospital was established by public subscription in 1874, either as a new build or using a pre existing building. It originally provided four beds for in-patients and was managed by a voluntary committee with public donations. The original block is a two storey stone structure with stone and red brick details under a complex many-gabled roof featuring several decorative chimney stacks. It has been subject to various additions.
