Abstract/Summary
Codsend Stone Setting (ENPHER Ref: MSO 9189) is an irregular stone setting, orientated roughly northwest to southeast, running across the contour of Codsend 4 (Fig. 1-2). It consists of 7 recorded stones, one of which (Stone D) is situated on the access moorland to the north of the field boundary in land owned by the National Trust.
In 1989 Stone D was recorded as standing: “0.7 metres high, of roughly diamond-shape section approximately 0.35 by 0.27 metres. It has a slight lean to the east.” And in 1997, it was located during a mapping survey.
The on the 03/09/18, the site was visited as part of the Exmoor Standing Stone Condition Survey 2017-2018. No upright stone could be located in the co-ordinates provided for Stone D (SS 8831 4121). Instead a recumbent broken post was noticed close by at: SS 88310 41212, possessing similar dimensions and matching the description above (Fig. 3). The site was revisited again on the 03/10/18 by S.J. Blaylock (Conservation Officer – ENPA), B. Stow (Ranger – NT), and J. Fuller (HE Intern – ENPA).
