Abstract/Summary
This Statement of Significance and Heritage Statement has been prepared to accompany an application for listed building consent for alterations to The Lynch, which together with its squash court was listed Grade II on 8th September 2016. The purposes of this statement are firstly to provide an assessment of the significance of the designated heritage assets, and secondly, to assess the impacts of the proposals upon the significance of the designated heritage assets and their settings.
As this building has been listed recently, it benefits from a comprehensive description of the house and its history, together with a section explaining the reasons for its designation. The site lies within extensive gardens, and contains ancillary buildings; however, these are not referred to in the list description, and Historic England has advised they did not form part of their listing assessment. The list description is included as an appendix, and its contents are not repeated within the Heritage Statement. This report supplements this information only where it is necessary to inform the assessment of the significance of the elements of the building and its setting which are the subject of the proposed changes.
This statement does not provide a detailed historical appraisal of the site, nor does it record in detail the complete architectural development of the building. It provides a proportionate assessment of significance for the purposes of understanding the significance of the designated heritage asset, its setting, and the impacts of the works in order to inform the current applications. It is based upon a visual assessment of the heritage asset supported by sufficient documentary research to elucidate the results of the visual assessment. A full examination of documentary and other sources has not been undertaken
