Abstract/Summary
This report details the geoprospection of a survey area at Ricksy Ball, Exmoor, commissioned by Exmoor National Park Authority. The survey was undertaken as part of the Exmoor Mires Project, with the objective of evaluating the archaeological potential of a topographic anomaly, identified from lidar data, in advance of possible disturbance of the area related to mire restoration work.
The anomaly has a semi-circular form, but field inspection of the feature revealed little in the way of definable earthworks. Consequently, this geophysical survey was commissioned to help further elucidate the nature of this topographic anomaly.
The survey had three components, with the first two being gradiometer survey and earth resistance surveys. However, in this study it was critical to model all the data sets in pseudo 3D space to look at the correlation between the geoprospection data sets and the topography, allowing a more accurate interpretation of this anomaly.
