MSO12142 - The Stags Head, West Street, Dunster (Building)

Early 19th century frontage, fabric possibly earlier. Render, plain end pilasters, plinth, cornice, plain parapet with moulded coping, slate and double Roman tiles. Two-storeys, right-hand half of frontage breaks slightly forward. Four windows, wooden casements in flat-headed openings with stepped voussoirs. Square-headed recessed door opening. [2] The 2002 Character Appraisal for Dunster Conservation Area states that "the Stags Head Inn (no. 10) is an early 19th century rendered frontage to a possibly earlier structure with end pilasters, recessed door, four wooden casement windows in flat-headed openings with stepped voussoirs." [3] The Monarch record for the building states that it is a medieval mid 15th Century house, altered in the 19th Century and now a public house. However, no source is provided for this information. [4] The building was visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 6. [5] A dendrochronological sample was taken from the building in 2015 but this failed to date the structure. [6,7] The building is shown on the Tithe Map for Dunster and labelled 83. The Apportionment describes it as a house and garden, owned by John Nation and occupied by William Prideaux. (The Stags Head Inn was further up the street, in the building recorded as MSO12140). [8] The building is labelled "New Inn" on the 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it had been converted into an inn fairly recently.
