A house originally dating from the 17th Century, in a three-cell with cross-passage form but much altered in the mid to late 19th Century.

Full Description

Cottage. C17, extensively altered mid-late C19. Local stone random rubble, double Roman tile roof half hipped left with gablet, overhanging eaves and sprockets, brick stack right gable end lateral stone stack centre with slate roofed bread oven projection. L-plan: probably 2-cell extended with wing at rear, possibly containing stair turret, and agricultural wing added right gable end. One and a half storeys, gabled dormer right rising from eaves, ground floor to left of stack wall built out with reset 4-light ovolo moulded mullioned window, right segmental headed 2-light window with brick arch perhaps earlier entrance, lower independently roofed wing to right, D=unlit on facade, entrance on left return via C19 lean-to roofed porch set in D=angle with possible stair turret projection in rear wing. Half-hipped, Gabled roof [3] The house is mentioned in the 2003 Conservation Area appraisal for Bossington and West Lynch, which states "Next on this side is Holmhurst, originally 17th century, again three cell and cross-passage, but much altered in the mid-late 19th century. Here exposed stone rubble with some brick dressing and double Roman tiled roof is used, in contrast to the more traditional lime-wash render and thatch." [4] The building was visited in March 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 6. [5]
