MSO10182 - Post-medieval borrow pits south of Old Barrow Down (Monument)

Full Description

Two large pits are visible on the hillside above the road and shown on the Ordnance Survey map at SS 8432 3194 and SS 8431 3190. They may be mining prospection pits but are more likely to be related to road construction. [1] The two features are part of a larger group of four or five earthworks depicted on the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps and labelled "Old Quarries". [2,3]
