Full Description
A large bomb crater, centred SS 8251 4424, lies 300 metres to the northwest of Three Combes Foot on rough grassland, at about 385 metres above Ordnance Dayi,. The crater, 11 metres in diameter and 3 metres in depth, may be related to enemy bombing raids during World War Two, as planes would often waste bombs on open country. Alternatively, it could represent the location of a controlled explosion carried out by the military to dispose of World War Two ordnance in the years following 1945. [1] The crater was recorded at 1:2500 scale using differential GPS as part of an archaeological survey of the Larkbarrow area. The survey was carried out by the Exeter office of English Heritage at the request of the Exmoor National Park Authority. A client report was produced as part of the survey work and is available from the NMRC, Swindon. [2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
