Full Description
A linear earthwork, SS 8236 4352, lies on rising ground 700 metres to the northeast of Larkbarrow farmhouse, at around 390 metres above Ordnance Datum. The feature consists of a spread earthen bank, 2.6 metres wide and 0.4 metres high, which can be seen to run under a 19th Century boundary wall. The date and purpose of the bank is uncertain. It may be related to the initial setting out of Larkbarrow farm in the 1840s, with this boundary subsequently abandoned in favour of the sequence of enclosure walls which we see today. [1] The earthwork was recorded at 1:2500 scale using differential GPS as part of an archaeological survey of the Larkbarrow area. The survey was carried out by the Exeter office of English Heritage at the request of the Exmoor National Park Authority. A client report was produced as part of the survey work and is available from the NMRC, Swindon. [2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
