MMO3681 - Possible Iron Age enclosure west of Croydon Hall (Monument)

A double ditched rectangular enclosure of possible Iron Age date is visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark. Its location and form suggest it may represent the remains of an enclosed settlement or hillslope enclosure.

A double ditched rectangular enclosure of possible Iron Age date is visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark in fields west of Croydon Hall, Withycombe. Centred at approximately ST 0103 3886 on a hillside, the enclosure is defined by an area of darker crop growth, indicating the presence of a ditch and measuring between 2.5 metres and 3 metres wide. The outer enclosure, visible on all four sides, although fragmented, measures 65 metres long and 60 metres wide. The inner enclosure is only visible as a parallel ditch on the north-western side; it measures some 44 metres long. There is no trace of an entranceway, but there are numerous breaks in the cropmark on all sides. The rounded corners of the outer enclosure are typical of Iron Age enclosures in this area, and the location and form suggest it may represent the remains of an enclosed settlement or hillslope enclosure.
