Full Description

Probable military features of Second World War date can be seen on aerial photographs as earthworks centred on circa SS 8658 3473. The earthworks are circular or irregularly ovoid in shape and measure between 2 and 8 metres across. Spread out in small clusters across almost a kilometre of the northwestern ridge of Winsford Hill, the origin of the pits or craters is unclear. They may be shell craters from the Exmoor firing ranges or pits dug as part of military training exercises, perhaps associated with the enigmatic camps and enclosures about 3 kilometres to the southeast. The shallow features are short lived, not visible on later aerial photographs.
