Full Description
A quarry of probable post-medieval date can be seen as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, approaching the summit of Red Stone Hill at circa SS 8130 3962. The earthwork is roughly linear in shape, measuring circa 75 metres long and up to 12 metres wide. The precise function of the pit is unclear, but it is on a similar orientation to a much longer pit to the south east, which may support the interpretation that it is exploiting a mineral resource seam, perhaps iron ore. It may predate the enclosure of Red Stone Hill, and been divided into two pits by a 19th Century field boundary. It remains visible on aerial photographs of the 1970s.
