Summary

Small stone quarries, probably dating to the post-medieval period are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks. They were likely abandoned prior to 1890. They may have provided building stone for Simonsbath during the mid 19th Century.

Full Description

A series of small stone quarries, probably dating to the post-medieval period are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks cut into the southwest facing slope above the River Barle near Halscombe. Centred at approximately SS 7790 3877 the quarries vary in size from 10 to 19 metres across. They are depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1890, and annotated as "old quarries" suggesting they had been abandoned prior to this date. The quarries may well have provided building stone for properties in Simonsbath during the mid 19th Century.
