Full Description
Three small circular depressions or pits are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks cut into the southeast facing slope south of Duredon Farm. Centred at approximately SS 7563 3992, the possible quarries measure between 10 and 20 metres across. The ground surrounding them is slightly uneven, possibly as a result of spoil dumping. They are not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey, suggesting they were abandoned prior to publication in 1890. Burton refers to adits being cut in this location by Schneider and Hannay in the mid 19th Century, in an attempt to find iron ore, and it is possible that these pits were part of that attempt. [1-4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
