Full Description
Several small irregular depressions are visible on aerial photographs in a field southeast of Wintershead Farm. Centred at approximately SS 7804 3622 up to five pits are visible, varying in size from 10 to 50 metres across. Some are depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and annotated old quarry, suggesting they were abandoned prior to publication in 1890. It most likely dates to the post-medieval period. There is no indication as to what material was extracted here, but given the proximity of Wintershead Farm, building stone for the farm and field boundaries is the most likely option.
