Full Description
Two small, circular pits or quarries and associated spoil heaps are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks in a field south of Wintershead Farm, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7693 3655, the quarries are roughly circular, with irregularly shaped edges. The westernmost quarry measures 15 metres across, while the easternmost quarry measures just 8 metres. Both quarries have small spoil heaps adjacent to them. They are not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1890, suggesting they were abandoned prior to this date. They likely date to the the post-medieval period. There is no indication as to what material was extracted here, but it may well have been building stone for Wintershead Farm itself.
