Full Description
rcA rectangular stony spread with a central hollow is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the southwestern edge of Long Holcombe, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7686 3529, a narrow bank defines an area measuring 36 metres long by 28 metres wide. Shallow pits or scoops can be seen within the bank, measuring up to 16 metres across. Its precise date and function are uncertain, but given its similarity to the features recorded to the north (MSO7085 and MSO7086), it is most likely to be a spoil heap around a small area of surface quarrying, probably associated with the surrounding post-medieval drainage system. [1-2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
