Full Description
A circular mound visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the north facing slopes of Whitefield Down, Brayford, appears to be the remains of a prehistoric, possibly Bronze Age cairn or barrow. Centred at approximately SS 7143 3666, the mound lies in a typical position for a funerary monument of this date, situated on high ground, overlooking Sherracombe. It measures approximately 14 metres in diameter, and there is no trace of a surrounding ditch. An existing barrow is visible approximately 800 metres to the northeast (see MDE1197) and a second possible barrow or cairn is visible 350 metres to the east. Further survey will be required to establish the precise nature of the monument.
