Full Description
A small irregularly shaped quarry, probably dating to the post-medieval period, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs on Little Vintcombe, south of Acklands Farm, Exmoor. Centred at SS 7325 3926, the quarry is cut into the north facing slope and measures 16 metres across at its widest point. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, indicating it was abandoned prior to publication in 1890. There is no indication as to what material was extracted here; however, it was likely a stone quarry supplying building material for nearby 19th Century field boundaries. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
