Full Description
A small subcircular pit or quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork east of Mole's chamber, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 71872 3953, the pit measures some 25 metres across. It does not appear particularly deep however, and may well ahve been at least partially backfilled. The quarry most likely dates to the post-medieval period, although there is a possibility of it being medieval in origin. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, suggesting that it was abandoned prior to this date. Several other quarries are visible in the vicinity, very few of which are depicted on the Ordnance Survey maps. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
