Full Description
Quarry pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, circa 350 metres to the northeast of Luccombe Mill, at circa SS 9197 4445. The earthworks are depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and annotated as Old Quarries indicating that the pits had ceased production by this time and supporting an interpretation of a probable post-medieval date. The earthworks are over 150 metres in length, but do not represent a single feature; it is likely that several phases of extraction are in evidence and that the earthworks were formed by continuous exploitation of the extraction pits over many years prior to 1889.
