Full Description

Although old quarries are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 in this location, perhaps indicating that the pits had passed out of use by this time, the features transcribed from the aerial photographs are much more extensive than shown on the maps. The function of the pits cannot be ascertained with any certainty from the aerial photographs alone, but it is probable they were limestone quarries associated with two former lime kilns, immediately to the east, also marked on the 1889 map (MSO11616). [1-3] A further old quarry is shown on the 1st Edition map slightly to the northeast at SS 9494 4209, with a further associated limekiln (MEM24290). [2] Both quarries are also shown on the 2nd Edition map. [4] The Tithe Map shows the central quarry (SS 9483 4205) situated within land parcel 298a. This is described in the Apportionment as "Road Lime Kiln and Quarry in Kiln Close", as part of Burrough Farm. A further lime kiln is also shown (MEM24291) associated with the western quarry, which is also shown as part of land parcel 297. This is also named Kiln Close, in arable use as part of Well Farm.
