MMO2653 - Post-medieval field boundary north of Longcombe Hill (Monument)

Summary

A ploughed out post-medieval field boundary is visible on aerial photographs as a very slight earthwork. It appears to have divided the extant field into two smaller fields, and was presumably removed to create a larger area, perhaps for grazing.

Full Description

A ploughed out post medieval field boundary is visible on aerial photographs as a very slight earthwork north of Longcombe Hill, Carhampton. Centred at approximately SS 9856 4134, the boundary measures some 130 metres long and up to 3 metres wide, although its width may have been exaggerated by ploughing. It appears to have divided the extant field into two smaller fields, and was presumably removed to create a larger area, perhaps for grazing. This boundary may well be associated with the deserted settlement of Longcombe Farm, which lies 100 metres southeast of this location. The boundary is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it had been abandoned prior to publication in 1889. [1-3]
