Full Description

A medieval or post-medieval road or trackway is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork north of Hart Cleeve and Ball Copse, Timberscombe. Beginning at SS 9623 4351, the track is visible as a flattened area between two narrow banks. It runs approximately north to south for some 110 metres, fading at SS 9618 4341. The western bank is depicted on modern and historic maps and forms part of the Civil Parish Boundary between Timberscombe and Wootton Courtenay. At the southern end of the road (SS 9618 4341), it connects with an extant pathway, indicating that it may have been part of a medieval or post-medieval routeway to Knowle Farm, Knowle Manor and Hart Cleeve. The road is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned prior to publication in 1889. [1-3]
